Virtual Tour of HandyCapable Network's Refurbishing Center
![]() Just inside of Ahead Computer on Lawndale Drive, members of the public can drop off their old computers at our donation table. ![]() Heading downstairs... Welcome to our facility! This is the main room, where the computer refurbishing takes place! ![]() Steve, one of our "HandyTech" volunteers, pauses for a moment while in the middle of bringing an old computer back to life! ![]() Another volunteer, Carl, also takes a quick break from software installation. Although Carl is unable to type, he uses a head pointer to operate the computer! ![]() This group of computers just came in the door and awaits the first step in our refurbishing process - data destruction. ![]() Every computer that we refurbish passes through this station. Here, we format incoming hard drives pursuant to Dept. of Defense standards so that any personal data on the computers is completely and totally removed. ![]() Next, the formatted computers arrive at one of our seven refurbishing stations. ![]() Ed, another "HandyTech" volunteer, leaves his work station to find a spare computer part. ![]() Boxes overflow with power supplies and other computer hardware. ![]() After the computers' hardware passes inspection, Windows is installed, along with an Internet browser, office software, anti-virus protection, and fun educational games! ![]() Next, keyboards and mice are assigned to the computers. ![]() Viola! These computers are now ready for a new home! ![]() But a computer wouldn't be much good without a monitor, would it? In our second room, the walls are lined to the ceiling with donated monitors that have been cleaned and have passed inspection. ![]() More monitors... ![]() And even more! We get quite an upper body workout on some days! ![]() Thank you so much for taking a "virtual tour" of HandyCapable Network's refurbishing center! I'm Barbara Davis, and as Executive Director, I personally invite you to take a tour of our facility so you can see, first-hand, the great work that our "HandyTechs" do each and every day! It really is inspiring and I hope you'll call (336-209-7360) or email me to arrange a visit or to discuss a computer donation from you or your business! If you do not have any computers to donate to our cause but would still like to help, you can make a tax-deductible contribution using the link below. We are always in need of financial support and truly thank those of you that can pitch in to help us reach our goal of putting a "Mouse in Every House!" |
