HandyCapable Network is happy to announce that past president Dale Metz has been awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. This honor is presented by the North Carolina Governor’s Office to citizens who have provided 30 or more years of exemplary service to the state. Dale was there for us when we first started and helped us start up as a 501 (c)(3). Dale has been a great supporter of HCN over the years and we send our deepest congratulations to him in receiving this honored award!

Imagine, what would happen if your computer were to be destroyed today? Where would all your important information go? Poof! Just like that, it’s all gone… If you or your organization are still not sure if “Cloud Computing” is the way to go, here is a great article to prove just how much more efficient, safe and secure it is than that old server you’re using! Nothing highlights the truth better than a true story.

VISTA 002

HandyCapable Network was happy to host Collin Burton from the Washington DC,  Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and Tynetta Darden from the North Carolina State Office of CNCS. We were also glad to have Fred Newman and Jerome Malloy from the Welfare Reform Liaison along for the tour as well. The purpose of this visit was to see the work of HandyCapable’s marketing and fundraising VISTA, Dunia Fleihan, in action. Trish Perkins, Nonprofit Program Director, is also an alumni of VISTA who served for three years at Faith Action International House.

Collin and Tynetta were very impressed with the work we do here at HandyCapable. They were especially excited to see our HandyTech’s in action, seeing their hard work first hand. We at HandyCapable would like to thank Collin, Tynetta, Fred and Jerome for joining us.

If you would like to see what we do at HandyCapable Network, please call to schedule a tour,  (336) 209-7360- we’d be happy to have you!

For Byron Slade, extracurricular activities and a computer from HandyCapable have made a big difference in his life.

Byron credits the marching band at A&T University as “the whole reason I’m still in school.” He kept up with classes and maintained his grade-point average for two years so he could keep on marching with the band.

When he started college, a friend presented him with a laptop for his high school accomplishments. He used that laptop for everything, he says, not realizing how important it was until it was stolen after his sophomore year. Without a computer, Byron found it harder and harder to keep up. His grades started slipping.

“Four out of five of my classes required online and computer access and that’s not easy to do without a personal computer, “ he says, “especially when you live off campus, as I do.”

That’s when he met Nancy Cavanaugh and Julia Blizin of Cove Creek Gardens. He’d just switched his major from Architecture to Horticulture and was interning at Cove Creek. When he told his new mentors about his computer problems, they suggested he get in touch with HandyCapable.

His HandyCapable computer, as well as Byron’s passion for plants and gardening, has helped him get back to the achievement that matters to him.

Thanks to HandyCapable’s friends and partners at Cove Creek Gardens for referring Byron to our low-cost computer program. Without them, Byron Slade might be still struggling to keep up his march to his own future.

HandyCapable would like to extend a HUGE thank you to Carolina Bank and Virginia Grimes, President of our Board of Directors, for their generous donation of $500 to our Give us the Keys! campaign. The success of the campaign and the purchase of our new van wouldn’t have been possible without them!
