For Byron Slade, extracurricular activities and a computer from HandyCapable have made a big difference in his life.
Byron credits the marching band at A&T University as “the whole reason I’m still in school.” He kept up with classes and maintained his grade-point average for two years so he could keep on marching with the band.
When he started college, a friend presented him with a laptop for his high school accomplishments. He used that laptop for everything, he says, not realizing how important it was until it was stolen after his sophomore year. Without a computer, Byron found it harder and harder to keep up. His grades started slipping.
“Four out of five of my classes required online and computer access and that’s not easy to do without a personal computer, “ he says, “especially when you live off campus, as I do.”
That’s when he met Nancy Cavanaugh and Julia Blizin of Cove Creek Gardens. He’d just switched his major from Architecture to Horticulture and was interning at Cove Creek. When he told his new mentors about his computer problems, they suggested he get in touch with HandyCapable.
His HandyCapable computer, as well as Byron’s passion for plants and gardening, has helped him get back to the achievement that matters to him.
Thanks to HandyCapable’s friends and partners at Cove Creek Gardens for referring Byron to our low-cost computer program. Without them, Byron Slade might be still struggling to keep up his march to his own future.
